How to make custom alarm sounds?

Is it possible to create custom alarm sounds like we can for ring tones? I tried copying wave, MP3 and wma files into the 'Rings' folder, but these files do not show up in the alarm sounds. I found nothing related to this in user manual. I also searched online with no luck. Does anyone have any idea on how to make custom alarm sounds? I am not good with cell phone so any step by step instructions will be greatly appreciated.
