Dear all,
(newbie question , i suppose.)

I am ready to flash hard spl and install a new rom on my htc diamond. I have 1.37 rom, with vodaphone.  I have backed up my contents using pim.

My question is this. I presume the hard reset will wipe the preinstalled programmes - opera, google maps and satnav, etc. Prewsumably I can reinstall windows mobile 6 and get the office applications through that.  But what about the rest - where can I get them from?

thanks,
alex

Well, for the most part the main programs are cooked into the ROM's You wont have to re-install those types of applications.

However, for instance, I am on Sprint, after a flash, I have to re-install Sprint nav, Sprint TV, Live search, things like that.  But those are all easy to find cabs, PPC Geeks for CDMA.  (XDA Developers has them for GSM phones)

I use Spb backup, so before flashing I back up using Spb (save to internal storage), then after flash I install spb again, run a restore and my phone is exactly like before the flash (all apps, contacts, sms, mms, email everything is restored), but with the new ROM.

Opera, Google maps, and other really cool apps are already cooked in, like Music ID, advanced config tool, Fm Radio, xt9 My Words.

(sometimes using PIM backup, my phone will not see the Pim.vol file and will cause me to lose messages, and old emails.)

EDIT:  If you back up with Spb before flashing, save your back up file to internal storage, I dont even know if you can store it to device, but I just wanted to make sure I stressed INTERNAL STORAGE.

Just a quick reminder for those who are new to PPC's and Electronics and such.  Remember.  Flashing ROMs is not for the weak of heart, or weak of wallet.  Remember, if a flash goes wrong, well, yer out of a bunch of money and now you have a very nice looking paperweight.  If you have any questions about ROM flashing ask BEFORE you do it, not after.  Go through the motions without actually committing to the flash first so that you know what you are doing before you do it.  I have seen too many people screw their phones up to the point that I have been very nervous about flashing these Diamonds.  I broke my cherry, however, I also can afford to go out and buy another one if I screw this one up.  So happy flashing everyone, Just remember to be careful.

I'm in the pre-cherry popping stage and feelin pretty nervous. I couldn't agree with you more jmy72 about being careful. It's just that I'm just a PPC noob but I have a great deal of experience with PC's. I've even toasted a BIOS ROM in my PC before and had to purchase a new chip.

I'm guessing purchasing a new ROM chip for PPC is not an option though, (am I wrong?) thus my fear. The hunger to flash is eating away at me though, I've been looking at MightyROM 4.6 and it looks tasty.

My primary goal right now is to remove all the "bloatware", if you will, from my phone. Ya know the dumb software the phone carrier puts on. I'm just now learning how to dig into the registry so I can take a look there. Which by the way I found a GREAT resource for learning how do that it is:

NOTE: Just don't fall for buying software when you can find it free.

Thanks,
Thermo

thermo - I liked your explanation on pre-cherry poppin'. Don't worry too much about it, I do it at least once a week and I had it for about 6 months if not more.
