Where are ringtones stored?

I've heard that to make the ring louder you can edit the ringtone?

Where in the directory structure are ringtones kept?

If you mean the default windows ring tones then:

Main Memory(Not Internal Storage)>Windows>Rings

It depends on the features of your gadget where you can store your ringtones. But the most common is the library ring tones. It is the exact place where you can locate the tones you are searching for.
