Will be getting my Touch Diamond in a few days.  I have Sprint's "Everything" plan so Telenav should be included.

Is this a good enough program for typical GPS use?

If I'm up in the mountains where I get no cell signal can I use the GPS with a third party program (TomTom?) provided there's satellite signal?

Thanks.

The GPS in google maps will work without the data connection on (of course its not downloading the image, but still locating the position).  Sprint navigation will not work without the data connection.  So, if a program like Tom Tom does not need the data connection, you might be ok.

I'm speculating this: I turned off the cellular radio (settings, communications) and tried to get the GPS working again in google maps, and even with WiFi on, it errors out... I know there is GPS hardware in the Diamond, so that option must turn on/off both the radio and the GPS.  If there is no service (including no roaming), there is still a question as to if the GPS would work.

I'll let you know if I find a clear answer to this somewhere.

Yea i've always wondered this and have seen so many different answers.. From my understanding, if you download, lets say, tomtom software for your ppc, it'll work w/ out data connection b/c the maps are already downloaded on your phone...

I could be wrong though.
